Nikko consists of two areas, one of which is the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and the other one is the Nikko National Park area. Two shrines and one temple were designated the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 1999, whose highlight is the Toshogu shrine, which is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that started ruling Japan from the early 17th century for over 250 years! Nikko National Park is a beautiful area centering around the Lake Chuzenji-ko, surrounded by mountains and a volcano, dotted with waterfalls, hot springs, another lake and marshlands.
