Kamakura used to be the political center of Japan when the first Shogun started to rule the country back in the late 12th century. Kamakura is only about 50km south of Tokyo, but is still steep in history and tradition. Visiting some of the main temples and shrines is the highlight of the area, whilst you can still enjoy walking through the main approach leading to the main shrine in Kamakura, lined by shops selling traditonal local handcrafts and foods.
